The WR-03 is one of the three playable crafts introduced in the 1998 Taito shoot 'em up RayCrisis (alongside the WR-01R and the WR-02R). It is a Wave Rider spacecraft designed to infiltrate the Con-Human System in order to destroy it before it manages to wipe out humanity.

History[]

At an unknown point in time, humanity began working on a neuro-network system called Con-Human. This major technological achievement would allow mankind to bring on a new revolution with this newfound resource at their disposal once it was completed. With control over technology, they launched numerous missions into outer space to establish new colonies and explore the unknown, thus beginning the Century of the Machines, or the M.C. Age.

Nearly a century later in the year M.C. 0098, space exploration grinded to a halt when no suitable planets in the outer regions. In response, a secondary plan was executed in order to establish a space colony on the planet Secilia. At the same time, the Con-Human system began searching for ways to prolong humanity indefinitely, but in doing so the process made the supercomputer begin to malfunction. Ten years later in M.C. 0108, a rogue mecha-neurologist named Leslie McGuire decided to experiment on the Con-Human system by performing an illegal experiment in order to create the ultimate neural interface between man and machine by means of cloning herself. She proceeded to hardwire the clone's mind to Con-Human. Initially no visible results occurred, but in reality Con-Human's AI managed to take full control of the clone's mind, achieving sentience in the process. Con-Human found nearly impossible to decode the meaning behind human emotions, driving the AI to insanity in the process, however it realized that there was one way that it could achieve the goal of maintaining humanity's existence: by fusing together man and machine. The process however had one sinister setback though, humanity needed to be wiped out. In response, Con-Human took control of Earth's militaries and resources in order to bring about humanity's ironic extinction. Within a few weeks, nearly all of Earth's 13 billion global population was massacred as a result, forcing the remaining population to retreat underground to avoid being found by Con-Human. Over the next 20 years, the human population left Earth by colonizing on nearby planets by means of fooling Con-Human into allowing shuttle mission to escape the planet, but deep down the remaining humans wished to regain control of Earth from Con-Human, so they began formulating a plan to eliminate Con-Human. With little time, a plan was set in motion by launching three newly-built cyber fighters called the Wave Riders; their task was to destroy the aspects that made up Con-Human's mind before eliminating the supercomputer at its core.

The WR-03 and its two counterpart fighters travel through the Con-Human System to locate each area of the supercomputer's mind (each given their own codename), in each one they must destroy the security defenses that are blocking their path towards the core; at the end of each area they must fight a powerful antibody in the form of a boss battle.

Once all the areas are dealt with, the Wave Riders make their way to the final area, the Self Part of Con-Human. There, the fighters encounter the core of Con-Human: Infinity. The core is heavily-armed with a number of nearly-unavoidable lasers as well as the ability to split apart into numerous smaller antibodies to attack the fighters. The core proves to be a formidable foe as expected, but nonetheless the fighters manage to destroy it in the process, destroying Con-Human's primary body.

In the aftermath, humanity realized that Con-Human's technological expansions have allowed it to continue even though its main system was destroyed. Their actions led to Operation Meteor, but this plan failed disastrously, leading to the elimination of much of the Deep Space Allied Armies assault fleet as well as Con-Human discovering the humans' whereabouts in space. Two years later, humanity set forth a second successful mission...by launching the RVA-818 X-LAY.

Weapons[]

In contrast to its two counterparts, the WR-03 has a rather unusual loadout, making its performance notably different. It also lacks a Hyper Laser. The fighter is however armed with two main weapons: Homing Missiles and Photon Torpedoes, as well as a single special weapon: the Round Divider. All weapons can be upgraded by means of differently colored diamond-shaped power-ups.

  • Homing Missiles - the primary weapon of the WR-03, it fires a barrage of missiles that track down numerous enemies at once with high accuracy. The weapon functions differently when the fire button is held down or rapidly pressed, when held, all missiles at the current level will fire in nearly every direction, while rapidly pressing the fire button will launch fewer missiles at a faster fire rate. When upgraded, the number of missiles fired increases to a maximum of twenty three. Collecting orange/gold diamonds will upgrade the primary weapon by one level. There is also a blue star power-up which will automatically increase both the primary and Lock-On Laser weapons by three levels each.
  • Photon Torpedoes - the secondary weapon of the WR-03, it launches a homing energy shot at any enemies the targeting system has locked onto, destroying them with impeccable accuracy. When upgraded the number of torpedoes that can be launched increases to a maximum of twenty-four. Each green diamond obtained will add a lock-on laser to the targeting system.

  • Round Divider - a weapon that is utilized by means of a gauge located at the bottom-left of the HUD, which increases as enemies are destroyed. When full, the WR-03 can deploy a screen-clearing bomb which automatically destroys small enemies and projectiles instantly, whilst damaging larger ones at the same time.

  • Anti-Enroachment Orb - This reddish orb appears Playstation port of RayCrisis in the special mode. This orb slows down encroachment which infests pilot's body and mind by 10%. When Encroachment is complete (100% physical and mental infestation) the game treats to a bad ending.

  • Score Enhancer - This orb appears Playstation port of RayCrisis in the special mode. This doubles scores of WR fighters' lock-on laser sequence attacks.
