Vie de Marli, also known by its alternative name "Dumary Island", is an ancient island located off the coast of the Americas and it is home to a clan its native guardian clerics known as the Protectors. It is the main setting of Devil May Cry 2.
Description
Located upon Vie de Marli itself is an entire European-style village of presided over by an huge old clocktower near the village is a half-comtemporary, half-medieval city with its own train station borough sharing the same name of the very isle itself. The secret catacombs built beneath the land and within its secret passages lead to the island's harbor. A more modern-looking city, now often called "Uroboros City", was built around the Uroboros Corporation's "Skyscraper Sanctum", including a factory with an underground subway station and an off-shore oil rig. Ancient, intricate, and partially flooded ruins are hidden beneath an obscure sleepy garden located somewhere within the island.
History
Several centuries ago, this island was discovered by religious refugees from the Mediterranean regions, who were branded as heretics for continuing to believe in old pagan deities by followers of different faiths. These people, along with runaway slaves, assimilated to form a new culture. They came to worship gods and goddesses they knew came from a different dimension beyond Earth's boundaries, and the rites performed and embraced in honor of these "greater powers" often resembled exorcisms and demon-sealing ceremonies. These beliefs were headed by clan of guardian priests who borrowed the demonic power of their "gods" in order to protect them, their worshippers, and their very legends by using the power of their gods to defeat the enemy deities. These "Guardians" were later referred to as the "Protectors".
Long ago in the past, exactly 2,000 years ago, the legendary demon knight Sparda appeared from the demon world to aid in exorcising an ancient evil known only as Argosax, who was once praised by a secret tribe of people among the inhabitants of Vie de Marli, and was the most malevolent god that ever existed. Sparda used the 4 holy relics known as the Arcanas with the help of the Protectors clan to banish the powerful devil Argosax, and although he was temporarily trapped within the Demon World itself after the final battle against him, Sparda eventually returned to the human world.
