RVA-818 X-LAY is a futuristic, powerful but an experimental star fighter (fighters if played in 2) that appears as a provided player-controlled character in RayForce/Gunlock respectively. It was developed by the mankind who are driven from their home planet by a supercomputer gone wild and fighting the losing war against the said supercomputer. RVA-818's main goal is to fight the oppressive machine (Con-Human) by destroying the now-infected Earth entirely, meaning X-Lay's quest to destroy Con-Human is a suicide mission.
Plot[]
Con-Human, a supercomputer which once oversaw the continual existence of mankind, malfunctioned and launched a genocidal campaign to purge humanity who are not amalgamated with machine in the year December 24, M.C. (Machine Century) 0185. As Con-Human's campaign to wipe out non-amalgamated humans raged on for over 7 decades (meaning humanity's attempt to stop Con-Human in RayCrisis failed), mankind's attempt to fight back proved fruitless, and after suffering immense and tragic losses of lives the surviving humans fled to space and formed Outer Planet Allied Forces to protect themselves. Not content to leave humans alone in space even after conquering Earth in totality, Con-Human's military follows human survivors to space to finish them off. Humanity once again attempted to defend themselves by launching Operation Meteor, but as before the operation ended in disaster for humanity and Outer Planet Allied Forces' military is all but collapsed. Facing the gravest crisis, the Outer Planet Allied Forces' leadership realized they still had one last dice still left to role: RVA-818 X-LAY.

Although RVA-818 X-Lay proved itself to be an exceptional craft during its testing phase, due to the unstable nature of the Cybernetics Link System (a process of cybernetizaiton of pilots and linking them to mobile weapons) during a test flight the craft along its test pilot went out of control before both were eventually self-destructed. Since the tragic incident further development of RVA-818 X-Lay had been indefinitely halted, while two surviving prototypes were sealed. However, after Operation Meteor ended in disastrous debacle Outer Planet Allied Forces had no choice but to revive the two X-Lay crafts and bring them back to operational status. With two chosen android pilots, RVA-818 X-Lays were deployed as last-ditch efforts to destroy Con-Human in battle that is to be known as Operation RayForce. RayForce's objective in which RVA-818 X-Lays are spearheading, is to fly into the core of Earth and destroy Con-Human before it can destroy the remaining pure human species. Sounds all fine except one secret: should this operation is successful and Con-Human is destroyed, the Earth will also be destroyed due to the massive influence that Con-Human constructed to fulfill its bloody crusade against mankind.
Once the operation commenced, Outer Planet Allied Forces' military remnant served as diversion while RVA-818 X-Lays lifted the heavy weight of the operation. After pacifying space and surface of Earth, RVA-818 X-Lays flew deep into the Earth battling their way through Con-Human forces and its mechanical governors as the deeper RVA-818 X-Lays flew into the tougher the resistance became. Eventually, RVA-818 X-LAYs succeeded in infiltrating where Con-Human resides, and the supercomputer refused to shut down without a fight. After Con-Human sustained numerous hits and damages in a vicious duel to the death, the supercomputer violently explodes into several pieces flying all over the place, ending its tyranny upon humanity. But Con-Human's body still remained, and RVA-818 X-LAYs inflict the fatal blow using their lock-on lasers towards Con-Human's body, eradicating it.

The destruction of Con-Human which was the core of Earth itself, triggered a cataclysmic explosion of the planet and unable to escape RVA-818 X-Lays were caught full brunt of the Earth's obliteration. As the ending credit rolls after Earth is gone, asteroids which were once part of planet Earth now scattered around where the planet Earth once stood. Amazingly RVA-818 X-Lays survived and were seen in the middle of asteroid field, though crippled beyond repair before wrecked starfighters and asteroids surrounding the doomed crafts zoom out, alluding that RVA-818 X-Lays are lost in the vastness of dark space. In a post-credit, one RVA-818 X-Lay's cockpit screen displays what was to be its final message "mission completed" to Outer Planet Allied Forces. Then that RVA-818 X-Lay's power goes down for good as the game screen goes black, ending the game. The fates of RVA-818 X-Lays' android pilots remain unknown.
Powers and abilities[]
RVA-818 X-LAY is outfitted with two weapons: a primary weapon that fires straight lasers and increases in power when the player accumulates power-ups, and a secondary lock-on laser launcher, which can also be increased in power, that can target up to eight enemies at once by moving the targeting reticent. This weapon is used to attack enemies that appear on a lower plane than that of your craft, which are inaccessible to the player's primary weapon. Some enemies and bosses can only be damaged by lock-on laser launcher so mastering the lock-on system is essential to progress and survive.

- Gamers after the ending of RayForce wondered if there is a true, more optimistic ending like Bubble Bobble but Taito staffs denied that there are other endings.
