R-Type is a series of playable space fighters in every installments of horizontal scrolling shooters of the same name. This term is a generation of R-Series which is used to combat the misanthropic forces during the war against the dangerous biological alien faction called the Bydo Empire. As in the original appearance, for example, the first variant was R-9A Arrowhead, a spiritual predecessor that later develops the evolution of the next generation of spacecraft. Throughout years, R Series have gained immense popularity among gamers and earned iconic status equivalent to Vic Viper (from Gradius franchise), the Silver-Hawk (of Darius series), and the Fire LEOs (from Thunder Force series).
History[]

The series of starfighters were first developed by the Space Corps, a largely mysterious space federation who behaves in a similar role as the United Nations, only spread out further throughout space. In order to preserve the peaceful natures of its territory, they designed small yet efficient and complex starfighters under the name R-Type to help fend off hostile invading forces such as the Bydo Empire. Despite of possessing highly advanced technology, Space Corps insists on R Crafts be piloted by humans instead of creating unmanned R Crafts. This is because Bydo's ability to infest, corrupt and takeover non-human objects faster than living beings; for reasons unknown, Bydo takes much longer time to infest and corrupt humans and crafts controlled by humans. The other reason is that even with Earth's high technology, artificial intelligence is still less flexible to variables occur in wars than humans.
The first of these crafts was the R-9A Arrowhead, which while effective was later succeeded by other models in later installments, each with new weapon capacities (although the R-9A remained in service). But Bydo proves to be extremely patient yet tenacious foe: to defend mankind against the enemy that does not stop coming, Space Corps increasingly focuses on creating ever more efficient and deadlier R Crafts. This single-minded devotion to create newer and better R Crafts becomes obsession, and in the process of creating superior R Crafts well-beings of R Crafts' pilots are egregiously ignored and neglected, resulting creations such as R-9C Customs (removing pilots' limbs, extracting pilots' brains and place it in a bio-computer that can be connected to the r-9C etc.), R-11S Tropical Angel (approving Craft series lacking anti-gravity controller causing pilot to go G-LOC status) and R-90 Ragnarok (stunting pilot's bodily growth) etc. Amazingly however, understanding Bydo are extremely formidable for for Space Corps to resort these said inhumane methods to win, pilots accept harsh treatments they are forced to undergo.
Weapons[]

The R-9A Arrowhead with all of its upgrades.
Each craft consists of a maneuverable weapon/shield known as a Force Device, which fires simultaneously with its respectful spacecraft. The device can also be attached to the head fighter should the craft come in contact with the device, enabling stronger firepower and providing minimal protection to the front or back of the fighter from weak enemy firepower. The device can also be launched from the craft to allow firepower in hard-to-reach areas. The device typically grows larger (and thus increases the firepower) with each power-up obtained by the starfighter. Force Device is the only thing that can inflict meaningful damage to Bydo.
The main craft also features a chargeable weapon known as the Wave Cannon, which can penetrate through multiple Bodo crafts as well deal serious damage to bosses. The Weapon is later altered in successor crafts to be able to charge up twice to allow an even more powerful shot to be fired, usually in the form of either smaller seeking shots or one colossal shot roughly twice the size of the main craft. As war against Bydo became intensified, series of various Wave Cannons are featured in successor R Crafts.
