Quantum is one of four protagonists in the 2007 shoot 'em up PSP conversion Hudson Selection Vol. 2: Star Soldier (alongside Assault Caesar, Enigma, and Rijndael). It is a fighter built by the Brain Army that was subsequently captured by the Geoscience Union at some point. It possesses a rather unique arsenal of weapons.

History

In the year XXX of the New Space-Time Century calendar, Caesar manages to destroy the Brain Army, but despite the brief period of peace, something sinister remains afoot...

The Geoscience Union, based from a space resource search shuttle, receives an urgent message, warning them that the Brain Army was not destroyed, and that it was rebuild its forces by constructing a new space station to replace those that were destroyed during the events of Star Soldier. Adhering to this warning, the union sends a reconnaissance spacecraft to investigate the matter, but it mysteriously goes missing; before so however, it sends a message showing a strange planetoid that resembled the main star of the Brain Army. Seeing this evidence confirmed the union's suspicions, so as a result, a plan was organized by its security council in order to fight back against the Brain Army's potential return. During that time, the union manages to capture an enemy fighter and reprogram it in order to fight alongside the union's new state-of-the-art fighter Assault Caesar against its former master. In addition, by using the fighter, the union could gather vital battle data in order to learn more about their enemy's attack strategy.

Quantum (alongside its Union counterparts) infiltrate the Brain Army's defenses across 10 bases across space, decimating their forces whilst eliminating its commanders along the way. Eventually, after crippling the enemy on the final base (referred to as its "Nest Point"), they confront the army's leader (unofficially name the "Central Brain"), where after a brief but intense battle, they successfully destroy. With the Brain Army destroyed, effectively ending their threat for a second time.

Weapons

Quantum is a rather unusual spacecraft. While it possesses a single primary weapon in the form of a cannon, it is notably different from the other crafts as it lacks a frontal shot. All of the craft's shots are fired from the sides of the fighter, this makes it excellent when dealing with flank attacks, but at the same time very difficult to deal with enemies from the front. The weapon can be upgraded three times by obtaining "P" power-ups that are occasionally dropped by destroyed enemies, doing so will increase the number of shots fired; at max power, five shots will be fired forward, whilst one additional shot will be fired behind the spacecraft.

The craft is also equipped with a smart bomb-like weapon in the form of a volley of explosive dart shots, which upon hitting an enemy, will detonate in a explosion that deals constant damage for its entire duration. Unlike other Bursts, this weapon can be charged up much quicker, making it a vital compensation when attacking frontal enemies.

In addition, once the final power-up is obtained, a rotating shield will be activated around the craft, which protects it for up to five hits, however getting hit once while the shield is active will downgrade the main shot to level 3.
