Male Damsels (also known as Distressed Dudes) is similar to the Damsel in Distress, except it happens in boys and men. Males can fall into dangerous situations in many ways. Usually he is kidnapped or captured by the main antagonist, swept away by a river; possessed/brainwashed by a ruthless average criminal or an evil supernatural entity, chased and attacked by a weird monster or dangerous animal, transformed into a vicious monster or animal, or caught up in a natural disaster. Mostly he can free himself. Sometimes the heroine can save them, just like the hero do when they save them. Occasionally, even the villains save them, though reasons for doing so may vary.
Sometimes this trope was regarded as a product of modern feminism but older. When classifying fairy tales, one distinguishing mark of several types of tales is that a man (or men) is rescued — generally by the heroine. While he is generally her Love Interest, they are generally her brothers.
Compared to the Damsels in Distress, the Distressed Dudes are somewhat more likely to save themselves in the end, to be saved by someone of the same sex, or, if saved by a woman, to be saved by one using her traditional, feminine strengths, rather than by someone using a more direct approach. When the Distressed Dude is rescued by a brave woman.
Is never uncommon for him (or for another character) to describe this as an injury to his masculinity. If he is in a relationship with the strong gal, he may be a quite useless boyfriend. This may be Played for Laughs, though sometimes the Distressed Dude will learn An Aesop instead.
The male character may have picked up the pace. If he was a cool dude before getting kidnapped, he may suffer this. If he continues to fight after being freed, he is but a tough type of Dude in Distress compared to an inactive man that lacks action.
