Griffin is a slightly powerful fighter that makes its debut in Raiden Fighters 2: Operation Hell Dive. In spite of not being popular in terms of selection, Griffin managed to avoid the fate of Endeavor and later appears in Raiden Fighters Jet.
History[]
Raiden Fighters 2: Operation Hell Dive[]
Griffin was created after the first Great War by the newly formed military headed by former revolutionary after it scored an immense triumph against the old governmental military led by an evil dictator which were forced to abandon the capital as the latter retreated. Originally conceived as a seaplane, the Griffin was redesigned to meet the Gun Dog Squadron's needs for an enduring attack aircraft with a long loitering time. The Griffin's redesign is done to bring tremendous firepower to bear against hapless ground targets. Four years after the first Great War, dictator and his loyalists - refusing to accept defeat, spent four years since the first Great War to rebuild their ravaged military, established a new militarist state and began attacking the fledging new state. Operation Hell Dive activated to defeat the enemy, Griffin along with its sister fighters in Gun Dog Squadron were deployed to repel the dictator's military and free occupied territories.
This is to be Griffin's first major battle. Because Griffin inherited partial abilities of retired fighter Endeavor, it ends up inheriting Endeavor's foibles as well (such as slow maneuverability). In spite of said shortcomings, Griffin flew through 6 stages of various environments taking on enemy military, braving their ferocious firepower. After destroying significant enemy forces, in the final stage Griffin along with its fellow fighters penetrated into the enemy state's capital, defying enemy guard unit's desperate resistance and destroyed the enemy's secret weapon: Red Eye. With the Operation Hell Dive and the enemy once again dealt with devastating blow, Operation Hell Dive will go down in military history as the greatest combat ever. But because the enemy leadership is still alive and well, Gun Dog Squadron must remain vigilante for their eventual resurgence.
Raiden Fighters JET[]
Griffin returns in Raiden Fighters Jet. It had been decommissioned from air force sometime after Operation Hell Dive as it became obsolete along with other sister prop engine fighters in an age of jets. Still, the new government's air force transitioned Griffin into a virtual simulation vehicle. Pilots are to undergo this combat simulation training with high remarks in order to be chosen to pilot the new air force's latest state-of-the-art jet fighter named Ixion.
Once the training commences, the pilot will be subjected to battles through various virtual missions encountering many enemies from previous two Great Wars. If a pilot performs too poorly, the training will prematurely end in simulation level 35, being told to do better. If a pilot performs better, he/she will be treated to tougher simulation levels until level 45; here if a pilot performs excellently, he/she will pass the training and gets to fly Ixion into a real combat. But if the pilot performs substandard, he/she will be taken to level 50 which is another dead-end level. After level 50 the pilot will be informed that while he/she got a passable grade, there is still a room to aim higher and the game ends.
Powers and abilities[]
Although supposedly latest model and new type, Griffin is deemed to be the weakest of fighters. Its laser consists of small pods that are launched. They then aim at an enemy and fire several green bursts of energy before disintegrating. The Charged Laser special is very useful: four pods fire powerful straight frontal lasers that cut through enemies. The Parachute Bombs are exactly like its predecessor Endeavor. This time, however, the Charged Missile Special(scattering Parachute bombs in all directions) takes a shorter time to charge up. The charged attacks of Griffin are really the only good attributes worth noting. Because of its sub-weapons can be difficult to employ, when a player operates Griffin, must rely on the fighter's main shots.
