Flying Ray is a forward-swept winged and prop-engine fighter that appears in the debut of Raiden Fighters 2: Operation Hell Dive and its sequel, Raiden Fighters Jet. True to its name, Flying Ray does somewhat resemble a ray in design. Flying Ray was an experimental design to test how efficient forward swept wing fighters could be. Flying Ray is fast, yet stable and its powerful charge attack has a short lag time, which makes it a fine choice for beginner players. Additionally, this fighter has 2 alternative colors: red in Raiden Fighters 2 and blue in Raiden Fighters Jet.

Raiden Fighters 2: Operation Hell Dive[]

Flying Ray is created and commissioned by the new governmental air force in post-Great War, a war from Raiden Fighters. The war ended in victory for the force that subsequently created Flying Ray which became a new government and took control of the country. A whole new military force was created, around this time 1st generational jet fighters were in production. However, peace as was expected from the ending comment from the first game did not occur. The defeated old military under a dictator that abandoned the capital as it retreated after hastily gathering whatever manpower and equipment it can salvage, refused to acknowledge the new government and waged guerrilla skirmishes against the newfound government.

In spite the said skirmishes, things were stable. Utilizing four tranquil years to rebuild their ravaged military, the dictator's loyalists unexpectedly struck, overwhelming the new government's military and occupying regions that are supportive of the new government - triggered the beginning of Second Great War. The new government's military organized a new strike force in which Flying Ray is part of and launched a daring counterattack operation which if succeeds may turn the tide of the war for the new government. This operation is to be called Operation Hell Dive. In spite of being made of prop-engine, Flying Ray proved to be formidable fighter against its many jet opponents.

After flying over various areas, destroying loyalists' war machines and freeing captured regions, Flying Ray along with its companions flew into the enemy stronghold - taking the war to the enemy. Despite fierce resistance from the opposite side, Flying Ray and its fellow fighters braved the danger, waged the enemy force's ultimate weapon named Red Eye, and finally destroyed it. The Operation Hell Dive is deemed an immense success: it had dealt a devastating damage to the dictator's forces and successfully repelled them, not to mention wrestling occupied territories and reintegrating them. However, because the dictator's forces were not completely eradicated, the game's ending message states that one must not let down vigilance, for one day they may revive.

Raiden Fighters JET[]

Flying Ray makes its appearance in Raiden Fighters Jet. In this game the plane is tinted with blue coloring. After Operation Hell Dive, Flying Ray had been retired from frontline service along with other prop-engine sister fighters. It is converted into a simulation mechanism operated by the new governmental air force which is focused on training and grooming pilots' skills to pilot Ixion, a second generational jet fighter that demands nothing but the best pilot in terms of skill. Through the first phase of the game, should Flying Ray be chosen the pilot will undergo several rigorous virtual reality combat training taken data from previous Great Wars.

In the simulation training various enemy forces from previous wars make their appearances. The simulation mechanism will move around the pilot to different training stages depending on the pilot's performances and being able to meet requirements (use fewer smart bombs as possible, unlock and earn certain amounts of particular types of medals, suffering minimal losses during certain boss, etc.) presented at the beginning of each simulation levels. The final evaluation will be based upon the pilot's overall earned grades. If the pilot passes the simulation training, he will receive an emergency order to scramble with Ixion in order to stop the Dictator loyalists' surprise attack on the new government's city. But if the pilot either fails to pass the simulation training or reach simulation level 50, he is told to do better, and the game ends.

Powers and Weaknesses[]

The Flying Ray's L sub-weapon basically shoots narrow 5-way lasers that pierce heavy enemy armor which Flying Ray has inherited from Endeavor, another prop-engine fighter from Raiden Fighter. But lasers shoot sideways and thus has not much effect against enemies that attack from front directly. As for M, Flying Ray has missiles that turn towards enemies when they happen to be on sides. The missiles have piercing effect on most enemies especially useful during boss battles. But its main shots (concentrated) are weak, so to play Flying Ray effectively player must rely frequently on M/L sub-weapons.
