Both Devastator and Eraser are the names of one of the playable fighters in Raiden Fighters series, especially in its sequel and JET. Making its debut as Devastator, it was modified and rechristened as Eraser after events of Raiden Fighters.

Devastator[]

Devastator was first introduced in the first Great War which raged on between revolutionary and the governmental military led by the dictator. It was the most technologically advanced warbird ever built at the time. Interestingly, Devastator is equipped with both props and jet engines simultaneously. Unfortunately, it was a little too ahead of its time. This fighter, while powerful had unforgiving handling and was very difficult to land. It had the highest accident rate than any fighter aircrafts serving the Gun Dog squadron. Only a few Devastators survived prior to deployment to the first Great War.

But once deployed, Devastator proved its worth flying through various enemy territories decimating them along with its fellow Gun Dog fighters. Eventually after ravaging two enemy main units, Devastator smashed through the enemy capital, laying waste to the cream of the dictator's elite forces guarding their HQ and destroyed the enemy's fort Rafflesia. The war won thanks to great activities by Devastator and Gun Dog fighters. The dictator and his military, after suffering tremendous damage because of their defeat in the Great War, were forced to abandon their capital as they retreated, while gathering whatever remains they can salvage. After the war Gun Dogs, now the official air force for the new government, underwent to make the necessary conversion into the more reliable aircraft variant and renamed it Eraser.

Eraser[]

Eraser, or formerly Devastator had been undergone some significant modification: first Devastator's search laser and moderately spread main shot are replaced (given to Death Header) with Beast Arrow's straight laser beam, its L-based charging attack along with Endeavor's concentrated main shot. Only weapon system Eraser maintained from Devastator was napalm missiles. This makes Eraser being all about direct full-frontal assault. This made Eraser enhancing firepower and rapid-firing ability but sacrificed defense coverage and thus made Eraser vulnerable to enemies attacking from sides. Also, in spite of having both jet and prop engines Devastator's low speed persisted onto Eraser. But Eraser would deploy into action before these weaknesses can be properly addressed.

Four years passed since the military of old dictatorial regime was ousted from power. However, loyalists of the dictator established a new militarist nation and using four years of false peace, rebuilt their forces. Then without warning enemies struck, overwhelming the new government's military and occupying vital territories supportive of the new government. With the new government's military launching a counterattack operation codenamed Hell Dive in hopes of reversing fortune, Eraser flew into action teaming up with Gun Dog squadron. While Gun Dog fighters provided Eraser side securities, Eraser eradicated enemy forces utilizing its newly built power designed to obliterate enemies directly before it. After flying various locations erasing enemies' units, Eraser along with other Gun Dog fighters broke through into the enemy's final defense line, smashed their final fort and destroyed their secret weapon called Red Eye.

As happened four years ago, the enemy force was dealt with crushing defeat and was forced to retreat yet again. While Operation Hell Dive would go down in one of greatest battle in military history, the enemy still exists and one day they would surface as they had done before.

Raiden Fighters JET[]

Eraser makes its return to Raiden Fighters JET. However, Eraser along with Gun Dog's other prop-engine fighters had been retired from frontline service since they became obsolete in an era of jet fighters. This does not mean it has faded into the dustbin of history: on the contrary Eraser and its sister prop fighters were remade into virtual reality simulation devices. Eraser's task as training craft is to groom pilots who has potential through rigorous training and make them more efficient. And if by some luck, there may be one pilot skillful enough to pilot Ixion, the new government's latest state-of-the-art jet fighter. During the training, if pilot performs poorly he/she is told to do better, and the game ends. But if the pilot performs with flying colors, he/she will pass the test and is immediately ordered to drive Ixion and scramble into action when the remnants of dictator's military launches surprise attack. Eraser is not seen again after that.

Powers and abilities[]

As implied by their names, Devastator and Eraser possess all-around powerful weapons. Two crafts can make short work of large enemies and even bosses. Though the Devastator is a slow plane (despite possessing both jet and prop engines), it has the most powerful secondary weapons out of all other planes in Raiden Fighters. Its missiles are a devastating napalm type missile. The Laser weapon is the Electro-Zapper Beam which is similar to Truxton's laser weapon (which is from the old game Truxton by Taito). It fires an Electric Beam that locks on to an enemy. The Charged Missile Attack can destroy tough enemies easily.

In its upgraded version, Eraser, the weapons are from two other planes of the original Raiden Fighters with different names: Beast Wing's Laser (Pulse Beam) and Devastator's Missiles (Ultra-Fire Cruise Missiles). Even the charged specials are the same. The Charged Laser is a deadly blast that can destroy medium-sized enemies instantly. The Charged Missile pummels enemies relentlessly, destroying even the toughest enemies easily. However, because Eraser's combat abilities focus on concentrated front, it leaves vulnerable to enemies attacking from sides and thus Eraser is best played in 2 player mode.
