You cannot have a story without a love interest. Heroes can be in love with a heroines or in vise versa at the beginning or middle before the ending.

Sometimes, love can be hard if they do not get along, hate each other or why they cannot fall in love. At the end, heroines or heroes return their feelings for them and who knows? They may get married or continue their relationship.

There are often three types of romance:

  • Cold love - Such examples happen when the protagonist meets somebody they are immediately in love with, but the love interest keeps rejecting them through the main action, and they only (if ever) hook up by the end. Examples are Mary Jane Watson in the first two Spider-Man films and Layla]] for the majority of Sky High.
  • Unrequited love - This is akin to Lust. However villainous examples of unrequited love end up in disaster for all the lovers. Heroic examples are different (i.e. Peter and Mary Jane get together after lusting after each other). Such examples could start like cold love but progress as the story deepens. Examples of Unrequited Love include Ginevra Weasley and Hermione Granger towards Harry Potter and Ron Weasley respectively. Oftentimes the love interest will return the love but this isn't necessary.
  • Unconditional love - This is probably most common. Examples would be Link who expresses this with Princess Zelda. Often makes for the most dramatic story.

Though in some cases, one person has feelings for another, but the other is oblivious to the crush (i.e Louis' feelings towards Peaches).

Live-Action[]

  • Harry Potter:
    • Ronald Weasley is deeply in love with Hermione Granger, and he uses Lavender as a possible romance to make Hermione jealous in book six, but when he finally realizes its Hermione he loves and that she has always loved him they start dating in book six.
    • Harry Potter falls in love with Ginny Weasley as the series progresses. His affection for her was first shown in the second book. However, throughout The Goblet of Fire and The Order of Phoenix, he had on and off romance with Cho Chang, with Harry only dating Ginny afterwards.
    • Severus Snape's deep love for Lily is what inspires him to protect Harry and spy on Lord Voldermort for Professor Dumbledore in an attempt to fix his past mistakes and to fulfill the wishes of the woman he loved, honoring her sacrifice for her son. His love for Lily is also the reason his Patronus Charm is a doe (similar to Lily's) and it never changed over the years because his happiest memories are still the moments he had with her.
  • Star Wars:
    • Anakin Skywalker falls in love with Padmé Amidala despite of the Jedi rules not allowing him to have attachments and love. They marry in secret and she gets pregnant with twins. Eventually, Anakin's love for Padme would be his downfall because to prevent his visions her dying in childbirth to turn into reality, he is tricked by Palpatine into fall to the dark side and become Darth Vader.
    • Princess Leia and Han Solo fall in love with each other despite of them not getting along initially. After the war is won, they marry and have son, Ben Solo.
    • Rey and Ben Solo (also known as Kylo Ren) fall in love even as they are in opposite sides of the war and the Force. They have a strong and unique Force connection between them, a Force dyad, which is the equivalent of them being soulmates. Thus, despite the circumstances, the Force always tries to bring them together, allowing them to understand each other. Ultimately, her love helps Ben to come back to the light side.
  • Forrest Gump is in love with Jenny Curran, however it takes a while for Jenny to appreciate Forrest.
  • Jacob is in love with Sarah and fights the murderous necromancer Mathias and his undead slaves for her.
  • Rick O'Connell is in love with Evelyn Carnahan and they eventually marry when he saves her from Imhotep.
  • Kathleen "Kat" Harvey loved Vic de Phillipe but he betrayed her by making out with Amber Whitmire, his true girlfriend, and Kat dumped him. She also loved Casper McFadden and properly got involved with him.

Cartoons[]

  • Megamind likes to kidnap Roxanne Ritchi since he knows that Metro Man and Roxanne are a couple, Roxanne later reveals that they weren't together since he's not her type. During the movie, Megamind (disguise as Bernard) started to fall in love with her and decide to give up being evil so he can be with her as a hero which he did at the end.
  • Toothless falls in love with a female Light Fury the moment he first sees her. The Light Fury falls in love with Toothless after seeing him draw a picture of her. They officially become mates and have three offspring.
  • Angie is in love with Oscar and when she finally confesses her feelings, Oscar realizes that he feels the same way about Angie.
  • Aladdin and Princess Jasmine are in love on their Magic Carpet ride in the "A Whole New World" sequence.
    • Belle and The Beast are in love after the romantic dance.
  • Cinderella and Prince Charming are in love while dancing outside the ball prior to midnight.
  • Flynn Rider and Rapunzel fell in love while seeing the floating lanterns on Rapunzel's 18th birthday.
  • Buzz Lightyear begins to fall in love with Jessie at the end of Toy Story 2. This still applies in Toy Story 3, when Buzz was switched to Spanish Mode (courtesy of Rex, when the toys are try to restore him from demo mode), The Spanish Buzz immediately falls for Jessie when he catches first sight of her.
  • Jerry Jacobsmeyer and Tracey Krumholtz were friends, but Tracey has a secret crush on Jerry. They reveal their true feelings to each other and fell in love in the sequel.
  • Steve Brentwood and Daisy Flemming fell in love with each other on their Friday night date after their high school's baseball game.
  • Fix-It Felix Jr. is in love with Sergeant Calhoun.
  • Woody and Bo Peep are in love with each other as they were owned by the same owner, Andy Davis and rekindled their relationship in the 4th movie.
  • Ariel falls in love with Prince Eric once she sees him at first sight. Eric falls in love with her voice after Ariel rescues and later falls in love with Ariel again as she spends time with him.
  • Sally falls in love with Jack Skellington as she relates to him on his problems. Jack Skellington slowly falls in love with Sally over the course of the movie and finally realizes how much she cares about him.
  • Teen Titans:
    • Robin is in love with Starfire.
    • Beast Boy is in love with Raven.
  • Stan Marsh is in love with Wendy Testaburger.
  • Dracula fall in love with Ericka when his eyes zings and later Ericka feel the same way after knowing Dracula's past and why he never date since his wife Martha's death.
  • Forrest Gump is in love with Jenny Curran, however it takes a while for Jenny to appreciate Forrest.
  • Kayley and Garrett are in love while developing their mutual attraction in the "Looking Through Your Eyes" sequence.
  • Homer Simpson is in love with his wife Marge Simpson. However, he also likes numerous other women throughout the show, most notably such as Lurline Lumpkin.
  • Thumbelina was in love with a handsome fairy monarch named Prince Cornelius.
  • Osmosis Jones is in love with Mayor Phlgemming's secretary, Leah Estrogen who shows no interest in him at first. However, as Jones begins to tail Thrax, a deadly virus, Leah shows concern about him and finally decides to resort to keep Frank in check, standing up to the mayor for the first time. And before Osmosis leaves Frank's body to pursue Thrax, he kisses Leah as way to say loves her. In the end, after saving Frank, Osmosis and Leah declare their love through a kiss.
  • Princess Peach fell quickly in love with Mario who ended up in her kingdom, as she recognized him a human being, because she was not the only human to end up in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Anime/Manga[]

  • Tails is in love with Cosmo while watching the moon together.
  • Kirito and Asuna fall in love with each other.
  • Usagi/Sailor Moon and Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask fall in love with each other, as they have in their past lives as Princess Serenity and Prince Endimeon.

Videogames[]

  • Link is in love with Princess Zelda who only returns his affection twice in the series. In Skyward Sword is where their romance is deepened.
  • Fox McCloud is in love with Krystal after rescuing her and defeating Andross.
