Being in Love is a scenario where a hero/heroine fell in love with a significant other.

Overview[]

While relative to either the author's taste, significance the plot, or both, a story can be potentially more interesting if it features a character, either the hero/heroine or side character with some significance fell in love. Heroes can be in love with a heroines or in vise versa at the beginning or middle before the end of their tale.

Regardless, the hero/heroine and their significant other find themselves facing obstacles over the course of the growth of their relationship, ranging from differences between them which must be sorted out first to possible world-changing consequences from their devotion to each other. Even in some cases, their feelings for each other started off as mere lust. But in the end, they more than often can find each other in their arms.

There are often three types of romance:

  • Unconditional Love: This is probably most common. Examples would be Link who expresses this with Princess Zelda. Often makes for the most dramatic story.
  • Cold love: A romance where the protagonist and their love interest having a rough start because the latter keeps rejecting them throughout majority of the story featured in. In many cases, they eventually hook up by the end. Examples are Mary Jane Watson in the first two Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films and Layla for the majority of Sky High.
  • Unrequited love: A romance which ultimately averted because the hero/heroine's crush rejected their affection or worse, already with someone else. Painful it might be, more sensible of heroes/heroines know better than wallowing into it. In some cases, the hero/heroine will do their best to ensure their former crush's happiness, especially if they happen to be the latter's confidant. The prominent example being Beast Boy from 2003 TV Series Teen Titans who moves on from his former affection with Terra who had apparently chose to embrace normal life following her revival.

Though in some cases, one person has feelings for another, but the other is oblivious to the crush (i.e. Louis' feelings towards Peaches).

  • Tails: He is in love with Cosmo while watching the moon together.
  • Kirito and Asuna: Over the course of their adventure in Sword Art Online, fall in love with each other.
  • Usagi/Sailor Moon and Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask: The two have been soulmates in modern day as much as in their past lives as Princess Serenity and Prince Endimeon.

  • Disney:
    • Aladdin and Princess Jasmine: Ever since their fateful meeting at the streets of Agrabah, Aladdin and Jasmine begin to develop feelings for each other, which only becomes apparent during their Magic Carpet ride while singing A Whole New World together.
    • Belle and The Beast: Initially taking Belle in at her father's stead when the latter had sordid misunderstanding regarding why he entered his castle in the first place, The Beast begins to develop feelings towards her and vice-versa once they start to open up about each other, particularly after saving her from a pack of wolves as penance for impulsively drove her away. Ultimately, their love for each other becomes the key to break the curse placed by The Enchantress to punish him long ago.
    • Cinderella and Prince Charming: During their dance together outside the ball durinh his party up until her abrupt departure as enchantments which formed her dress only lasted until midnight, Prince Charming begins to develop feelings for Cinderella, leading to him seeking her on the next day and freed her from her evil stepmother and stepsisters' clutches.
    • Flynn Rider and Rapunzel: They fell in love while seeing the floating lanterns on Rapunzel's 18th birthday.
    • Toy Story:
      • Buzz Lightyear: He begins to fall in love with Jessie at the end of Toy Story 2. This still applies in Toy Story 3, when Buzz was switched to Spanish Mode (courtesy of Rex, when the toys are try to restore him from demo mode), The Spanish Buzz immediately falls for Jessie when he catches first sight of her.
      • Woody and Bo Peep: The two have been in love since the first time Andy Davis had them. They even rekindled their relationship during the events of Toy Story 4
    • Fix-It Felix Jr. and Sergeant Calhoun: Although the two have rough beginning given to their contrasting games (Felix being extremely naive due to his namesake arcade's simpler and family friendly premise while Calhoun's darker and mature complete with the traumatix backstory revolvinh his first love's death), they eventually developed feeling for one another while searching for Ralph and undoing the mess he caused at Vanelope's arcade Sugar Ruch.
    • Ariel and Prince Eric: Arielfalls in love with Prince Eric once she sees him at first sight. Eric falls in love with her voice after Ariel rescues and later falls in love with Ariel again as she spends time with him.
    • Sally and Jack Skellington: Sally falls in love with Jack Skellington as she relates to him on his problems. Jack Skellington in turn, slowly falls in love with Sally over the course of the movie and finally realizes how much she cares about him.
  • Megamind: He used to kidnap Roxanne Ritchi since he knows that Metro Man and Roxanne are a couple until the reporter clarified that they don't romantically involved since the hero isn't her type. Before long, he developed genuine feelings for Roxanne which, coupled with revelation about Metro Man faking his death during their final battle in order to retire and pursuit his dreams and realization of him being just as capable as his rival when it comes about being a hero, sees him giving up being evil.
  • Toothless: Toothless falls in love with a female Light Fury the moment he first sees her. The Light Fury falls in love with Toothless after seeing him draw a picture of her. They officially become mates and have three offspring.
  • Angie: She is in love with Oscar and when she finally confesses her feelings, Oscar realizes that he feels the same way about Angie.
  • Dracula (Hotel Transylvania): He falls in love with Ericka when his eyes zings and later Ericka feels the same way after knowing Dracula's past and why he never date since his wife Martha's death.
  • Kayley and Garrett: The two are in love while developing their mutual attraction in the "Looking Through Your Eyes" sequence.
  • Thumbelina (Don Bluth): Thumbelina was in love with a handsome fairy monarch named Prince Cornelius.
  • Osmosis Jones: Osmosis is in love with Mayor Phlgemming's secretary, Leah Estrogen who shows no interest in him at first. However, as Jones begins to tail Thrax, a deadly virus, Leah shows concern about him and finally decides to resort to keep Frank in check, standing up to the mayor for the first time. And before Osmosis leaves Frank's body to pursue Thrax, he kisses Leah as way to say loves her. In the end, after saving Frank, Osmosis and Leah declare their love through a kiss.
  • Timmy Brisby and Jenny McBride: Timmy realizes that he developed feelings for Jenny and follows what his heart says by professing his love for her. Upon this, the pleasantly surprised Jenny happily reciprocated his affection.
  • Diego: He can't help but fell for Shira despite her affiliation with Gutt's Pirate Crew, much to Sid and Manny's amusement.

Live-Action[]

  • Star Wars:
    • Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala: The two becomes lovers despite of the Jedi rules not allowing him to have attachments and love. They marry in secret and she gets pregnant with twins. Eventually, Anakin's love for Padme would be his downfall because to prevent his visions her dying in childbirth to turn into reality, he is tricked by Palpatine into fall to the dark side and become Darth Vader.
    • Princess Leia and Han Solo: The two fall in love with each other despite of them not getting along initially. After the war is won, they marry and have son, Ben Solo.
    • Rey and Ben Solo/Kylo Ren: In an unexpected turn of events, the two fall in love even as they are in opposite sides of the war and the Force. They have a strong and unique Force connection between them — a Force dyad — which is the equivalent of them being soulmates. Thus, despite the circumstances, the Force always tries to bring them together, allowing them to understand each other. Ultimately, her love helps Ben to come back to the light side.
  • Forrest Gump: He is in love with Jenny Curran, however it takes a while for Jenny to appreciate Forrest.
  • Jacob (Fading of the Cries): He is in love with Sarah and fights the murderous necromancer Mathias and his undead slaves for her.
  • Rick O'Connell and Evelyn Carnahan: Despite their rough start, they eventually develop feeling for one another during the quest for Hamunaptra and later stopping the revived Imhotep. The two even married after defeating the revived High Priest.
  • Kathleen "Kat" Harvey: She initially had a crush on Vic de Phillipe until he betrayed her by making out with Amber Whitmire, his true girlfriend, resulting her dumping him. She also loved Casper McFadden and properly got involved with him, even though the latter's status as a ghost.
  • The Chipmunks: The trio can't help but fell in love with members of their supposed rival the Chipettes upon the first sight.

Literature[]

  • Harry Potter:
    • Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger: Ron is deeply in love with Hermione Granger, and he uses Lavender as a possible romance to make Hermione jealous in book six, but when he finally realizes its Hermione, he loves and that she has always loved him they start dating in book six.
    • Harry Potter: Harru falls in love with Ginny Weasley as the series progresses. His affection for her was first shown in the second book. However, throughout The Goblet of Fire and The Order of Phoenix, he had on and off romance with Cho Chang, with Harry only dating Ginny afterwards.
    • Severus Snape: His deep love for Lily is what inspires him to protect Harry and spy on Lord Voldermort for Professor Dumbledore in an attempt to fix his past mistakes and to fulfill the wishes of the woman he loved, honoring her sacrifice for her son. His love for Lily is also the reason his Patronus Charm is a doe (similar to Lily's) and it never changed over the years because his happiest memories are still the moments he had with her, even if it was never enough for him to let go of his prejudices.

  • Super Mario Bros.:
    • Mario and Princess Peach: Mario is in love with Princess Peach and will go to great lengths to ensure her safety.
      • Their 2023 film iterations also share similar relationship, which helped by Mario and Luigi being first humans who ended up in the world where Mushroom Land stood at long after her.
    • Luigi: He is in love with Princess Daisy which is hinted at on several occasions.
  • Rabbid Mario: Rabbid Mario is in love with the Rabbid warrior named Edge ever since their fateful encounter. Although Edge doesn't reciprocate yet, she doesn't mind being in his presence, especially considering he and his friends accepted her despite learning her dark origins.
  • Link: He is in love with Princess Zelda who only returns his affection twice in the series. In Skyward Sword is where their romance is deepened.
  • Fox McCloud: To his friends' pleasant surprise, Fox is in love with Krystal after rescuing her and defeating Andross.

Web Animation[]

  • Blake Belladonna and Yang Xiao Long: Blake and Yang have been closer than ever after they worked together as one in putting Adam Taurus out of his insanity, but it is during overcoming Curious Cat's punderstorm both huntresses realize how much they are soulmates all along.

Western Animation[]

  • Teen Titans:
    • Robin is in love with Starfire.
    • Beast Boy is in love with Raven.
  • Stan Marsh: He is in love with Wendy Testaburger.
  • Homer Simpson: He is in love with his wife Marge Simpson. However, he also likes numerous other women throughout the show, most notably such as Lurline Lumpkin.
