Bartholomeu is one of two protagonists of the 1992 Compile shoot 'em up Spriggan Mark 2: Re-Terraform Project (alongside its successor the Spriggan Mark 2). It is an Armoured Arm, a successor to the Spriggan, which is sent to battle an opposing force led by the main antagonist Marvy.

History[]

In the far future, Earth's population has grown so substantially that humans began to move out and recolonize on different celestial surfaces across the Solar System. One such surface that is in the process of colonization is Mars, but as the process unfolds, a war breaks out between two fractions, the Armoured Armed Forces (who are the successors to the Spirit Armed Forces from Spirit Warrior Spriggan), and an unnamed antagonistic fraction led by a turncoat named Marvy Donahue. While exploring the martian surface, a small Armoured Armed Forces fleet is suddenly attacked by the enemy, in response, several of forces' pilots are called into action by taking control of large Gundam-like mechs known as Armoured Arms. One pilot in particular named Greg Erwin mans a uniquely named mech called Bartholomeu, which is notably more powerful than the ones used by his colleagues. Bartholomeu is launched to fend off the enemy aggressors, but while the Armoured Armed Forces initially gain the upper hand, that all changes when Marvy arrives and destroys one of the fleet's main cruisers before escaping.

Facing this major setback, Greg and his team rethink their strategy as their fleet returns to Earth, only to learn that they are being attacked by the enemy as they leave the red planet. The commander orders the Armed Forces (including Bartholomeu) to repel the enemy as they journey towards Earth, along the way, they encounter an enemy fleet along the Moon's surface and destroy it.

Upon reaching Earth's Exosphere, Bartholomeu returns back to its bay, having suffered heavy damage during the course of the previous three battles, the Mech is decommissioned and Greg is assigned to manned its more powerful successor, the Spriggan Mark 2. From there, the new mech continues the mission of stopping the enemy from taking over the Martian colony...

Weapons[]

Bartholomeu's weapon arsenal is notably simpler and more limited than its legendary predecessor. It is armed with a total of four different weapons from the start, three of which have limited ammo which can be exhausted once the ammo capacity is depleted. Each weapon has its strengths and its weaknesses, and can be fired in any direction to maximize their combat effectiveness.

  • Plasma Cannon - the default weapon that can be fired with most exhaustible weapons, it fires a standard, rapid-fire cannon forward that is fairly powerful against most enemies. It is the only weapon that has unlimited ammo.
  • Cluster Bomber - deploys a bomber forward that explodes into a spread of five bullets in a fan pattern.
  • Homing Missiles - fires a large missile that tracks down nearby enemies and destroys them with moderate damage.
  • Plasma Saber - a melee weapon that can be swung to destroy projectiles and environmental objects. Against enemies, it is very powerful, but has a very limited range. When the fire button is held, the saber will be extended out, dealing contact damage to anything it hits without consuming the ammo.
  • Shield - though not technically a weapon, it represents the Bartholomeu's own vitality. Upon being hit, it will slowly decrease, and when depleted, will destroy the mech. It will slowly recharge over time if Bartholomeu avoids taking any form of damage.
